TRNW TECH TIP
OF THE MONTH!
ZF5-HP19 pressure regulator valve bore
The pressure regulator valve bore wear was severe enough to blow the D clutch drum apart!
ZF5-HP19 p-reg body (click to enlarge)

ZF5-HP19 Worn Pressure Regulator Bore!
This is an image of a ZF5HP19 pressure regulator valve body casting from a 2001 BMW 325i that had 135k on the vehicle. It had no reverse and the forward gears function normally, except it probably had no engine braking in manual low. I didn't check that prior to repair. The no reverse was caused by the D clutch housing (low/reverse) having the lugs blown off the end and the snap ring blown out. The probable cause of the blown drum was excessive pressure due to a worn main pressure regulator bore in the pressure regulator housing. You can see the linear wear in the bores and the edge wear in the one hole as well. The 5 land (second design) anodized main regulator valve looked and fit like new. The fix I used was to replace the housing with a new housing from ZF. This should give an image to compare too, should you need to check the bore on one of these, since this one was bad enough to blow the drum apart. more
