AXOD Tech Tips;

  • Check torrington inside of input sprocket and front planet with finger closely and check for smoothness.

  • Make sure accumulators seals fit tight.

  • Pop out sprocket support with prybar. It is not necessary to remove all the linkage and roll pins.

  • Always use the latest sealing rings( Orange with Red Specks).

  • Update all early 91 AXODE's (2 notch) to late 91 (1 notch) with the kit from Ford.

  • Make drum assembly installer out of a clothes hanger and hook into holes in sun shell, and lower assembly into case.

  • E4OD input/overdrive sprag will swap with AXOD input sprag for a more heavy duty application.

  • New planets are available (downgraded) with a plastic housed torrington instead of bushing. Front planet/shell part # F4DZ-7A398-A Also rear planet part # is E6DZ-7D006-A

  • There are many aftermarket valve body kits available for these units.

  • There is also a lube dam available to help lube the planets.

  • Don't overtighten the reverse drum support pin.

  • Upgraded lube tubes are available for 'E' models only.

  • It may be necessary to use a lip seal protector tool for installing the reverse piston in the drum.

  • Leaving out the intermediate wave plate may improve the 1-2 shift.

  • A new improved 1-2 capacity spring is available for a better 1-2 shift.

  • Check upper planet pinions closely. They may look good, but wobble around and be bad. Especially if pinion pins are burned.

  • Check lower planet splines closely.

  • Replace overdrive servo piston if rubber feels hard.

  • Always replace the early EPC with the later one. F6DZ-7G383-BA

  • Check pump drive closely for bearing wear.

  • Bench test shift solenoids before reusing.

  • Always replace aluminum forward piston with new steel piston available."F4DZ-7A262-A" * See "TRNW Pic Tip" below

  • New steel direct piston is also available.

  • Don't forget to install 'O' ring on turbine shaft for lock-up.

  • Careful not to mix early on/off lockup converter with newer pulse converters and vice versa.

  • Don't forget to install 3 accumulator pins thru channel plate.

  • Don't lost thermo element feed orifice from channel plate in machine.

  • Tighten vb to 100 inch lbs.

  • Use vb line up tools before tightening up vb stack.

  • Always check manual valve operation closely.

  • Replace broken accumulator springs.

  • Its very important to cross-drill valve body for all-time lube. * See "TRNW Pic Tip" below

  • Snip 1 and 1/2 coils off of drainback spring in vb to help improve lube.

  • Drill lube modification holes in vb plates.

  • Don't forget rear lube plug seal in case. Make sure it is all the way installed against the support.

  • 3 clutch forward packs can be converted to 4 by installing pressure plate from either direct or intermediate pack.

  • Replace boost sleeve in vb. They are always worn out.

  • Put A4LD pressure plate on top of clutch pack return springs to help avoid distortion when compressing them.

  • Be careful when installing check balls in pump bodys. Also '"E" Model check ball locations change every year. * See "TRNW Pic Tip below

  • Be careful with vb gaskets on all earlier units, they change every year.

  • Careful not to mix up lip seals.

  • Use early intermediate steels (.090) to adjust clutch packs. Air check drums thru sprocket support on bench. Poor direct clutch air check is normal.

  • E4OD input sprag inner race makes good AXOD front seal installer for builders on a budget. Also E4OD center hub makes good AXOD axle seal installer.

  • Make sure reverse and lube tubes are installed securely.

  • Make sure case and channel plates are clean and dry. Use spray tack on case gasket.

  • Make sure sprocket support is lower than the edge of the case before installing chain cover.

  • Tighten 3 sprocket support bolts last.(2 long 10's and 1 13mm) Draw them in slowly.

  • Crochet hook works great to remove vb clips.

  • Make sure relief check valves (pucks)in vb, don't bind up in bore and get stuck.

  • Make sure turbine shaft turns after tightening chain cover. Install pump rotor with groove up.

  • If forward piston has an 'X' figure on the under side there is no need to replace. If no 'X' figure then replace with "F4DZ-7A262-A" * See "TRNW Pic Tip" below

  • AXOD Pressure Regulator spring retainer plate faces the opposite direction of all other Ford trans. (C-4, C-6 etc....)

  • AXOD boost valve hollowed end faces out

    AXODE Valve Body Plate Identification;

I just had a problem identifying which year AXODE vb I was working on.
I know how to tell an early 91 from a late 91. Thats easy. I can tell
by looking at the notches in the plates. Early 91's have 2 notches, and
late 91's have 1 notch. I can also tell by looking at the holes in the
    plate over the bathtub.

Any way there is another ball that was also changed in '92'. I could not
tell if the unit I had was a late 91 or a 92. There is a ball change for
    both of these..
Well I finally decided I had a '92. There were no notches at all on
either plate, and I had the .215 lock-up orifice hole and the round
    solenoid.
I could not find any plate id info by way of notches after 91.
But I did find out that the 92's have a much larger lockup solenoid
orifice in the plate than 91's.
They changed to the modulated lock-up solenoid.
The orifice for the early lock-up solenoid is .030.
The orifice for the modulated lock-up solenoid is .215.
So, I put the ball in the 92 location in the pump body. ( Maybe I should
have looked before I dumped them out.)
Also the casting on the channel plate and case was F1, so don't ever go
    by that!
And 1 more thing....They eliminated a ball in 93. Argggghhhhh!! What
    next?
     ======
    Early 91....2 notches
    Late 91.....1 notch
    92.............no notches
    93............???
    94.......?? and so on...........................................trnsman
