ATSG CONFIRMED FIX - APRIL 2026
1997 Dodge R2500 47RE
Complaint: Transmission starting off in 3rd gear and setting no codes
Cause: Damaged (ESS), crank shaft sensor.
Correction: Replace the ESS
Part numbers related to the repair: N.A
Year Make and Model of the Vehicle: 1997 Dodge R2500 5.9L diesel
Mileage: N.A
Shop Name: Transmission Pros
Transmission: 47RE
Additional Notes: Customer complaints were starting off in higher gear and not shifting. Looking at data with scanner you could see that the desired governor pressure was zero and the actual governor pressure was showing 59psi, this would explain the 3rd gear start. Not sure why the computer was not coding for this. Shop also noticed that the was no engine RPM showing on scanner. The shop decided to see why there was no engine RPM, while checking the crank sensor they seen that the wires were chaffed and touching. Replacing the sensor fixed the transmission problem. When looking at the wiring schematics the crank sensor and the governor sensor share the same ground.
