ATSG CONFIRMED FIX - SEPTEMBER 2026
2018 VW Golf 09G
Complaint: Slips in 1st gear bad, setting code 17115 (P0731) incorrect 1st gear ratio.
Cause: K1 drum is cracked (split).
Correction: Replace the K1 drum.
Part numbers related to the repair: N.A
Year Make and Model of the Vehicle: 2018 VW Golf
Mileage: 60,000
Shop Name: A Affordable Transmission
Transmission: 09G
Additional Notes: A line pressure test at the L1 pressure tap came out within specifications, so they decided to replace the valve body. Unfortunately the problem was still there.
They removed the transmission for inspection, the clutches looked like new even though it was slipping, barely moving in 1st gear. After further inspection the piston was removed from the drum, the splines on the drum were checked which showed to be ok.
While holding the spline side of the drum and trying to turn the drum you could now see that the drum was cracked at the weld. Check the attachments. Point being, even though the clutches looked good, does not mean that all is ok.
Pictures/Diagram: Check the attachments.
