I've personally never had that issue in my shop but have built a few
units that have been rebuilt that had the gray tint to the aluminum and
it's caused from the parts washer water not being maintained properly.
It plays havoc on molded rubber pistons! I too use the Zep soap in my
washer and have never had problems with it, but we clean our machine
regularly too.
