TRNW-2: 10R80 Question

on the 10R80 when you press the plus button on the gear shot lever it lights up the gear you are in on the dash.  So my question is this the Gear Commanded or is it the actual gear ratio?   The reason I ask I drove one today and it displayed 4 and it felt like it was taking off in 4th.  It had no codes.  I thought that the display was showing Commanded Gear but now am leaning towards Actual Gear Ratio.  Anyone know?
