Thanks Robert. We just put it like the manual says (non-ESS=One Large ball and one small ball on the upper Vb). ESS= 3 large balls and one small ball.

Dan, we get that question someehat regularly. No idea why GM sometimes out one or both large balls that are needed for stop start units in non stop start units but they sure do it. It makes no difference if they are there or not on non stop start so it is not a problem, but is is indeed odd that they do that.

No Pat I sorry I wasn’t clear. I’m talking about the upper valvebody that has the big balls. It usually has 1 big no ESS OR 3 big balls with ESS. These 2022 and 2021 had 3 big balls and it is not ESS. No electric pump. Then the other one has 2 big balls also not ESS. I ASK ATRA and they sent me pictures that are from MOD AND spent help. While I realize the ball could have worn out my point is they should have been in there to start with. We are confused. Which seems to be the normal quite often.

Seen it Dan. I just put back whatever it had, not sure of the reasoning. I have also seen the lower VB with either 2 or 3 balls. It was explained to me that if it had the "cat eye" on the plate , it didn't matter whether the ball was there or not.

Group,

We have seen this 2 times this week. We are working on 2022 8L90 4.3 with NO ESS. Both of these have never been worked on. According to everything I seen it only takes 1 large check ball on the upper VB. One of the units had 3 large balls and the one today has 1 large ball in the middle and 1 by the pump. So does anyone know what the deal is?
