Yes it can be replaced in the truck, but make sure to hold the output shaft in tight so that none of the bearings fall out of place.  If they do, you can disassemble the entire back half of the transmission in the vehicle and glue everything back in place with trans gel.  Be careful of the park lever and tiny spring, as well as be ready for some weight if the output planet comes out with the housing.

Subject: TRNW-2: Allison housing

I have a 2007 4wd Duramax, the extension housing is cracked and leaking.  Can you replace this in the truck?  I think too much stuff will drop out and make it difficult to go back together.  I was under the assumption the housing has to be replaced with the unit out of the truck.  If anyone has ever done it in the truck, please let me know.
