I have done it a couple times. It's been years ago,but I don't remember it being that hard to do. As was said figure out a way to hold the output shaft in place. U joints are almost always the reason for cracks like this.

Subject: TRNW-2: Allison housing
I have a 2007 4wd Duramax, the extension housing is cracked and leaking. Can you replace this in the truck? I think too much stuff will drop out and make it difficult to go back together. I was under the assumption the housing has to be replaced with the unit out of the truck. If anyone has ever done it in the truck, please let me know.
