Lip seals were the update in 1996. Like Chris mentioned, keeping up with the changes was a challenge. At this point, you likely have mixed parts from previous rebuilds.

Start of production of 1996 is when they changed to the lip seals on the low/rev piston. However, they also added a cushion steel and changed the return spring retainer at the same time.

Subject: TRNW-2: E4OD Low Reverse Lip Seals

Hello Group/

Working on aN E4OD in a 1995 Ford F250 7.3L. Got my O/H kit from WIT
but my Low Reverse piston seals in the kit are straight cut and the
piston seals on my piston are tapered lip seals. It's been a minute
since i've rebuilt this unit and can't remember if the straight cut is
an upgrade or I just have the wrong kit. Every other lip seal and
gaskets look correct. Can someone refresh my memory?

Thanks
Tony
