I believe I used my C clamp vice grips on the ends of the axle to hold it in. (I have 2 pair) (It's been a while)

Subject: TRNW-2: DIFF, GM Gov-lock unable to remove axle clips

Has anybody ever dealt with a GM Gov-lock rear end that is worn where
the side gears contact the thrust block? The side gears are
over-extended and I cannot remove the axle clips. The springs behind the
posi-clutches are pushing out on the side gears and the axle won't push
in far enough to remove the clips.

Yes I removed the wheel speed sensors and I hammered on the axles. Even
pried the carrier over but it doesn't seem to be the carrier bearings
that is my problem.
